Revisiting these games really made my feelings on Odyssey solidify more, and I can't wait to replay that. I remember eschewing any sleep I could get out of it though and played through so much of it before having to leave, and going into 3D All-Stars had me do the very same start-to-finish run through. When the game came out on Wii U VC, it was midnight and I had a flight in ~6 hours. I love how deliberate and freeform it all is, how much player expression is evoked in its design, and the vibe of the entire game. If anything, the 3D World/Land games are more or less the ideal take on Galaxy's formula, although even though I recall loving 3D Land I don't actually "remember" much of it the same way I remember 3D World.Ħ4 may have aged in some areas but almost every single negative inclination I had about the game vanished in an instant the evening I blazed through all 120 stars. Hot take but I actually think the camera in Galaxy is worse than 64 in a few aspects, especially since the rigidity of the movement mechanics set back the amount of feedback you get out of it. Sort of sacrilege to say, but I'm genuinely not super hot on the Galaxy games and think they're some of the weaker 3D Marios, even though my writeup from a few days ago highlights how I feel Galaxy is better in a lot of areas I remember, and a lot worse in others. ![]() If I'd have to rank my personal favorite 3D Marios it'd be something likeģD World (the Switch port might push this above Sunshine since the character speed bothered me back in the day) Delfino Plaza is the only good thing I've found about the game so far. It feels disjointed and uninspired for me. The weird story and cutscenes make little sense yet I'll give them a pass because it's a Mario game, but I'd argue that Galaxy and even 64 felt more cohesive in its world than this one, with those two being a collection of random levels and Sunshine taking effort on having all the levels take place in the same environment. "strong world-building with the interconnected island theme"įor me it's just background dressing. Either you are thrown into an open environment that is not used in any meaningful way, you have to do some crazy platforming (with these poor controls) to get to the Shine, or you have the fluddless levels in which the game would actually feel better if it weren't for the controls and the camera. They make you think, about turning the game off. So far I haven't used the fludd in any way that it would impress me, Mario's movement is the worst ever, jumping and even changing direction while you are walking feel uncontrollable. If I were to have a fever dream in which I wasn't in control of my legs, the floor was always oily and slippery. or maybe because i hated where i lived after we moved and this was a bright spot even though the game wasn't perfect.Ĭlick to shrink."Controls like a dream" ![]() probably because i was still a teenager when it released and there was some nostalgia there. for some reason, though i remember generally not liking parts of it, there were some warm memories attached. ![]() Well, i'm glad to own another copy of sunshine at least. the original game, or the 3d all stars version, could have been included as an og version for fans to return to still. ![]() give it to grezzo - have them make a 16:9 version with new textures, update the camera and controls, and implement some qol features, like being able to continue in a level if you don't need to be kicked out if you want to keep collecting stars. In fact, super mario 3d all-stars could have just been a super mario 64 remake instead. shame it's held back by its original hardware and it's an even bigger shame that so little was done to modernize it for this release when it really deserved it. Beat sm64 for the first time since the 90s.
